Big Chief Monk Boudreaux is the leading practitioner of a cultural tradition that dates back over 200 hundred years in New Orleans-the Mardi Gras Indians. He has carried the title of the Big Chief of the Golden Eagles tribe since the mid-1960's and has performed all over the world, from the barrooms of New Orleans to Carnegie Hall. The chanting and drumming of the Mardi Gras Indians are perhaps the closest tie to African rhythms found in contemporary American music, and Monk is widely recognized as the best. Their music has influenced practically every style of music in New Orleans that followed in its wake: jazz, blues, R & B and funk, to name a few.

Born into the tradition as a young boy-his father was the chief of his own tribe-Monk began sewing his own Indian suit at a young age and has continued to do so ever since. His suits are hand-beaded, remarkably beautiful, and created anew every year. The Mardi Gras Indian tribes, which are actually comprised of African-American New Orleanians, honor a kinship with Native Americans that dates back to the time of slavery, when they shared a mutual bond of oppression and helped each other endure it. To this day, Monk hits the streets every Mardi Gras morning with his tribe, which is comprised mainly of his family members, including little children, some of whom are still in strollers. He sings traditional songs like "Iko Iko" and "Hey Pockey Way" as they meet up with other tribes over the course of Mardi Gras Day. After 50 years of celebrating this important heritage, he in now known as "the Chief of Chiefs."

Monk performed at the very first New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival in 1970 and continues to be a highlight of the festival every year. We are honored to have him celebrate the opening night party of the Bromberg's Big Noise in the Neighborhood Festival presented by AAA with us.

Big Noise Information

The Light Up The Queen Foundation is proud to announce Bromberg's Big Noise In The Neighborhood presented by AAA, a music festival taking place at Wilmington, Delaware's riverfront on Saturday, May 15th from noon-8PM.
